Nikki hadn’t realized how close Cassandra King lived to Kiania Watson until she’d turned onto Highway 36 driving into Stillwater. Her house on the corner of 3rd Street was about a four-minute walk south from Kiania Watson’s home in Stillwater. Had he spotted Cassandra King while he’d been stalking Kiania?

Nikki went over what little information she had about Cass’s family. Her husband had been a long-haul trucker before an injury landed him on disability. Her two older boys were in high school, and Nikki hoped both would be home from school when she arrived. Since Annie had reported her friend missing instead of her husband, Nikki had decided to surprise him instead of calling ahead.

She called Stillwater PD first.

“Chen.”

“Hey, it’s Nikki. Did you guys do a welfare check for Cassandra King?”

“Name sounds familiar. Hang on.” She could hear Chen typing over the speaker. “Yeah, a friend asked for the check, we spoke to the husband, Shane King. Is that the missing woman you called about earlier?”

“She lives in Stillwater,” Nikki said. “What did Shane King say?”

“That she probably took off. He confirmed her car, bag, cell are missing. The cell is one of those cheaper options, so once it’s dead or turned off, there’s no GPS. My officers did look for cell tower pings. The last one happened near Midwest Plastics, around five thirty p.m.”

“How do you know that’s the kind of phone she had?” Nikki asked. “Did they check with her husband?”

“Yeah, and he said she went through those like water. In the end, they didn’t see enough to call her missing persons. She could have dumped that phone, got another and left.” Chen lowered his voice. “Is she postpartum?”

“Eight weeks,” Nikki said. “I’m headed to talk to Shane King now as long as you’re okay with it.”

“Whatever you think is necessary,” Chen said. “I’m in court all afternoon, or I’d join you.”

“I’ll keep you posted,” Nikki promised. “Good luck in court,” she added before hanging up.

Bits and pieces of information had become a swampy mess in Nikki’s head. She had to stay impartial regarding Cassandra King’s disappearance.

Despite the similarities to Mariah and Kiania’s disappearance, she needed to stay open-minded. Without more evidence she had to consider the people closest to Cass as suspects, assuming she was actually missing and hadn’t left on her own accord.

Annie refused to consider that option, but everyone had secrets they didn’t tell a soul. Maybe Cass had decided to walk away from her life. Nikki made a mental note to ask about Cass’s postpartum experience and whether or not she’d experienced any depression or other issues.

Andrea Yates was a terrible victim of this. She hadn’t just decided to drown her children in the bathroom that morning. Yates had endured psychological problems for years and had been advised not to have any more children because her meds, including Haldol, had stabilized her depression and suicidal thoughts. Instead, she got pregnant with her fifth child right away and the children’s fates had been sealed.
